About Us
Studio 4 Values

The "4" in Studio 4 represents our four values which are education, community, family and respect. These four values drive our work with our clients as well as becoming the basis of the relationships that we build with young people through music and education. We are continually working with young people through the study of our community and through dialogue to help us define these values. Consequently, we have included quotes related to our four values. We believe that by respecting the opinions and ideas of both our elders and our young people, we can begin to bridge the gap between generations and formulate services and products for the future of education. We hope that you are enlightened and inspired by the quotes that we've assembled and we ask you to please share with us your ideas, comments or quotes so that we may add them to our conversations.

Education

Wake Up Everybody
(This quote is in tribute to Dr. Howard Fuller and the Black Alliance for Educational Options Symposium 2006)

Wake up everybody no more sleepin in bed No more backward thinkin time for thinkin ahead The world has changed so very much From what it used to be so there is so much hatred war an' poverty Wake up all the teachers time to teach a new way Maybe then they'll listen to whatcha have to say Cause they're the ones who's coming up and the world is in their hands when you teach the children teach em the very best you can.

Give the pupils something to do, not something to learn; and the doing is of such a nature as to demand thinking; learning naturally results.

Of all the civil rights for which the world has struggled and fought for 5,000 years, the right to learn is undoubtedly the most fundamental.

He who opens a school door, closes a prison.

It is, in fact, nothing short of a miracle that the modern methods of instruction have not yet entirely strangled the holy curiosity of inquiry; for this delicate little plant, aside from stimulation, stands mainly in need of freedom; without this it goes to wrack and ruin without fail. It is a grave mistake to think that the enjoyment of seeing and searching can be promoted by means of coercion and a sense of duty.
-- Albert Einstein

The secret in education lies in respecting the student.
-- Ralph Waldo Emerson

The object of education is to prepare the young to educate themselves throughout their lives.
-- Robert Maynard Hutchins

Education is too important to be left solely to the educators.
-- Francis Keppel

School is established, not in order that it should be convenient for the children to study, but that teachers should be able to teach in comfort. The children's conversations, motion, merriment are not convenient for the teacher, and so in the schools, which are built on the plan of prisons, ... are prohibited.
-- Count Leo Tolstoy

What we learn to do, we learn by doing.
-- Thomas Jefferson

Read and write yourself into freedom
Read and write to assert your identity as a human
Read and write yourself into history
Read and write as an act of resistance, as a political act for racial uplift so you can lead your people well in the struggle for liberation
-- Malcolm X

All learning has an emotional base.
-- Plato

Community

There is nothing more dangerous than to build a society, with a large segment of people in that society, who feel that they have no stake in it; who feel that they have nothing to lose. People who have a stake in their society, protect that society, but when they don't have it, they unconsciously want to destroy it.
-- Martin Luther King, Jr.

The challenge of social justice is to evoke a sense of community that we need to make our nation a better place, just as we make it a safer place.
--Marian Wright Edelman

Come out of the circle of time And into the circle of love.
-- Rumi

Living together is an art.

Citizenship comes first today in our crowded world...No man can enjoy the privileges of education and thereafter with a clear conscience break his contract with society. To respect that contract is to be mature, to strengthen it is to be a good citizen, to do more than your share under it is noble.
-- Isaiah Bowman

A community is like a ship; everyone ought to be prepared to take the helm.
-- Henrik Ibsen

Each of us is a being in himself and a being in society, each of us needs to understand himself and understand others, take care of others and be taken care of himself.
-- Haniel Long

We cannot always build the future for our youth, but we can build our youth for the future.
-- Franklin Delano Roosevelt

Family

Call it a clan, call it a network, call it a tribe, call it a family. Whatever you call it, whoever you are, you need one.
-- Anne Howard

The bond that links your true family is not one of blood, but of respect and joy in each other's life.
-- Richard Bach

If you cannot get rid of the family skeleton, you may as well make it dance.

Feelings of worth can flourish only in an atmosphere where individual differences are appreciated, mistakes are tolerated, communication is open, and rules are flexible -- the kind of atmosphere that is found in a nuturing family.

To put the world right in order, we must first put the nation in order; to put the nation in order, we must first put the family in order; to put the family in order, we must first cultivate our personal life; we must first set our hearts right.
